The dramatic and damaging impact of energy price increases demonstrates the direct and often unexpected impact of Global events on our daily lives. With the interconnectivity of energy supplies and our reliance upon often limited resources, above all, we must slash consumption to the minimum if we wish to remain financially viable.
For those schools currently in historically low-cost contracts, the full impact of energy cost increases has not yet struck home. Now is the time to use any reserves to invest in low-consumption solutions, the sooner the better. Increases are on the horizon, guaranteed. And if you are with LA Frameworks for energy procurement, please do not expect miracles. They operate in the same market as all other suppliers, and are unable to offer a full competitive tender to ensure the Best Value; put bluntly, you may well not know in advance how serious the budget impact will be.
By contrast, for the many schools already facing huge increases in cost today, beyond all expectations in many cases, the dynamics are different. There is little opportunity to make major infrastructure changes in the short-term, so cutting consumption through behavioural change is most likely the only way to even partly offset your increases. The cheapest kWh is the one you do not use. So make sure that your boiler timers are set correctly, your lights are off, and that electric heating in particular, is used infrequently.
