In the past few months there have been some welcome changes to the Department for Education’s appraisal guidance for schools and at BlueSky we’re delighted to see that the new guidance recommends the use of online solutions to support appraisal and professional development.
The refreshed guidance emphasises that appraisal “should be intrinsically supportive and developmental, conducted within a school culture that values openness and fairness.”
The emphasis on a ‘supportive and developmental’ approach to appraisal echoes the shift we have already seen in many schools. But if professional development is the driver of improvement, schools still need a robust approach that enables business leaders to evaluate performance in line with school priorities.
