Phone-Free Schools: New DfE Guidance

Written by NYES | Mar 5, 2026 9:45:00 AM

The Department for Education (DfE) has issued new guidance requiring schools to operate as “mobile phone-free environments by default,” with Ofsted now strengthening its inspection focus on how effectively mobile phone policies are implemented.

As schools adapt to these changes, many are looking for consistent, reliable ways to enforce a fully phone-free approach. Yondr phone pouches offer a practical solution, helping schools meet DfE expectations, demonstrate compliance during Ofsted inspections, and maintain a safer, distraction-free learning environment.

Unlike traditional bans, Yondr pouches still allow students to keep their devices with them, securing their devices physically, in magnetic-lock sleeves, during school hours. Used in over 200 UK schools already, the evidence shows it works.

Smartphone-free schools are rapidly becoming the norm, and schools and Trusts that act decisively are finding that clear system-level solutions reduce pressure on staff, rather than add to it.
